LIFE OF EMPLOYMENT

🦵Employment. A job. A 9 to 5. A contract. A payslip. For millions of us, this is where life happens. It pays the rent. It feeds the family. It gives us identity when someone asks, “What do you do?”

But what is the _real_ life of employment? Let’s talk honestly.

1. THE GOOD SIDE: Why A Job Is Still A Blessing?

Before we complain, let’s be grateful. Employment gives you things freedom can’t give overnight.

1. Certainty

You know that on the 30th, money will come in. That certainty lets you plan. Pay school fees. Buy groceries. Sleep at night without panic. In a world of uncertainty, a salary is peace.

2. Structure

The job forces you to wake up. To dress up. To show up. It teaches discipline, time management, and responsibility. Many entrepreneurs who are successful today learned those skills in someone else’s office first.

3. Skills and Experience

No YouTube course can replace 2 years of real work. You learn how to deal with clients, with pressure, with failure, with a difficult boss. You learn teamwork. You learn your craft. This experience becomes your currency for life.

4. Network

Your coworkers today could be your business partners tomorrow. Your boss could be your reference. The people you meet at work open doors you could never knock on alone.

5. Benefits

Health insurance. Paid leave. Pension. Bonuses. These are things self-employed people have to build for themselves. A good job packages them for you.

So yes, employment is not slavery. It is opportunity. If you use it well.

2. THE HARD SIDE: The Truth We Don’t Post on Facebook

But let’s also be real. The life of employment has a cost.

1. Your Time Is Not Yours

Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Traffic. Meetings. Even when you’re sick, even when your child has a performance, you must ask for permission to live your life. You are trading the most valuable thing you have — time — for money.

2. One Source of Income

One payslip. One boss. One decision away from being jobless. COVID taught us this. AI is teaching us this now. If your entire life depends on one job, you are one email away from crisis.

3. Building Someone Else’s Dream

You may be very good at your job. But at the end of the day, the company’s profit is not yours. The big bonus is not yours. You are helping someone else’s vision grow. And that’s okay… as long as you also have your own vision.

4. The Ceiling

No matter how hard you work, there is a salary band. There is a promotion cycle. There is office politics. Your growth is not 100% in your hands.

This is why so many employed people feel stuck. Not because the job is bad. But because they forgot to grow _outside_ the job.

3. HOW TO WIN AT THE LIFE OF EMPLOYMENT

If you are employed right now, don’t quit in anger. Win. Use the job as a tool, not a trap.

Rule 1: Work Like You’re Getting Paid in Skills, Not Just Salary

Treat every project like a masterclass. Learn Excel. Learn sales. Learn leadership. Learn how money moves in the company. One day you’ll leave, but those skills will follow you. Your salary can be taken. Your skills cannot.

Rule 2: Build a Second Income

Never depend on one stream. Start small. A side hustle. Freelancing. A rental. Stocks. A small business. Even $50 a month from something else changes your mindset. You stop being desperate. You start having options.

Rule 3: Manage Your Money Like an Entrepreneur

Don’t wait for “when I get a big salary.” Save now. Invest now. The goal of employment is not to spend your whole salary. The goal is to use your salary to buy your freedom later. Pay yourself first.

Rule 4: Protect Your Energy and Health

The job will take everything you give it. Set boundaries. Exercise. Rest. Be with family. Burnout is not a badge of honor. A job is a marathon, not a sprint.

Rule 5: Build Your Personal Brand

Don’t just be “John from Accounting.” Be “John, the guy who explains tax in simple terms on LinkedIn.” Be “Mary, the designer with the cleanest presentations.” Let people know you outside your job title. That’s your insurance.

4. THE BIGGER TRUTH

Employment is not the destination. It’s a vehicle.

For some, it’s a vehicle for 40 years until retirement. And that’s okay if it makes you happy.

For others, it’s a vehicle for 5 years to learn, save, and then start something of their own.

For others, it’s a vehicle to fund their art, their family, their peace.

There is no shame in being employed. There is only shame in being employed and not growing.

The goal is not to escape work. The goal is to reach a place where you work because you choose to, not because you have to.

                FINAL WORDS

To everyone in the life of employment right now: I see you.

The early mornings. The difficult emails. The boss who doesn’t say thank you. The commute.

You are not “just an employee.” You are building character. You are building skills. You are building your future.

So show up. Do excellent work. But don’t forget yourself.

Learn. Save. Build. Grow.

Use the job. Don’t let the job use you.

One day you’ll look back and say: “That job didn’t define me. It prepared me.”
