The word *"life"* means the way a person lives in a certain environment. Whether that environment is in the city, in the village, or even in the bush.
How you live in the environment you are in — that is your life. It doesn’t matter if it is good or hard.
Today, I want to talk about *the life of depending on employment*.
There is no harder life than depending on being employed in order to run your life.
*THE TRUTH ABOUT EMPLOYMENT
Let’s be honest.
There is *no employer in this world* who hires you so that one day you can become financially independent and live a better life than them.
Almost all employers around the world will give you a salary that is too small to meet all your needs. Why? So that you continue depending on them as your boss.
Most employers have also made it a habit to deny their employees the freedom to do other things that could generate income. They want you to remain 100% dependent on the job they gave you.
We all know that many young people are expected to support their families and help them grow economically.
But if you are depending on being employed by another person, especially a private individual, then *you are wasting time.*
Most employers "suck the energy" out of their employees. They make sure you don’t get time to build yourself economically.
How? By giving you a small salary and by taking up all your time so you have no hours left to do your own income-generating activities.
*EMPLOYMENT IS SELF-EXPLOITATION
The life of being employed is a life of self-exploitation. Even your personal decisions are no longer yours.
Most of the time you will be forced to do what your employer wants, not what you want. Why? Because you are afraid of losing your job.
We have all heard the saying:
*"Leaving a job is not work. Getting a job is work."*
Because of that fear, many of us continue working in very difficult and toxic environments.
There is a lot of abuse that happens in employment.
Sometimes payday comes and your salary is delayed.
Other times your salary is reduced for no reason.
And sometimes you are not paid at all.
All of this is part of the abuse that comes with accepting to be employed.
*Doing something without your consent is no different from SLAVERY.*
Think about it:
You wake up at 5am, travel 2 hours in traffic, work 9 hours under pressure, come back home tired, and you still can’t pay all your bills.
And if you complain, you are told, "If you don’t like it, leave. There are 100 people waiting for this job."
That is not freedom. That is survival.
*WHY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE STUCK
Many young people in Tanzania and around the world are stuck in this cycle.
Families depend on them. Parents expect them. Siblings look up to them.
But the salary they get can barely cover rent, food, and transport.
Yet they stay.
Not because they love the job.
But because they are scared. Scared of the unknown. Scared of starting something new.
The system is designed to keep you tired.
When you are tired, you don’t have energy to think.
When you don’t think, you don’t start a business.
When you don’t start a business, you remain an employee forever.
And the employer is happy. Because a tired employee is a loyal employee.
*EMPLOYMENT IS NOT BAD, BUT DEPENDENCY IS"
Let me be clear. I am not saying employment is bad.
Employment can teach you skills. It can give you experience. It can give you connections.
*But depending on employment alone to run your entire life is dangerous.*
What happens if you get fired?
What happens if the company closes?
What happens if you get sick and can’t go to work for 3 months?
If your only source of income is one salary, then one problem can collapse your whole life.
That is why we need to start thinking differently.
THE WAY FORWARD: BUILD SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF
In my next posts, I will come with practical ways on how you can free yourself and start running your life *without depending on employment*.
For now, here are 3 things you can start doing today:
1. *Use 1 hour a day for yourself.*
After work, instead of scrolling TikTok for 3 hours, use 1 hour to learn a skill. Learn digital marketing, graphic design, cooking, tailoring, farming, anything that can make you money.
2. *Start small.*
You don’t need millions to start. You can start a business with TSh 50,000. Sell mitumba, sell food, do deliveries, do affiliate marketing, offer a service online.
3. *Change your mindset.*
Stop thinking "I am just an employee." Start thinking "I am an employee today, but I am building something for tomorrow."
Remember, your employer will never build your dream for you.
You have to build it yourself.
*FINAL WORDS*
Life is not about working for someone else until you are 60 and then retiring with nothing.
Life is about freedom. Freedom to make choices. Freedom to rest. Freedom to provide for your family without begging for a salary.
If you are tired of depending on employment, you are not alone.
Millions of us are tired. But being tired is good — because it means you are ready for change.
Don’t wait for the "perfect time."
Don’t wait for more money.
Start where you are, with what you have.
Because the hardest life is not being broke.
*The hardest life is knowing you have potential, but choosing to waste it by depending on someone else.*
The journey starts now.
